Production Notes

A wine made from our primary partner sites, both growing spectacular Petit Verdot within an hour drive of Rocklands.

About 85% of this wine was grown by our good friend Sevi Garcia at Alta Vineyards in Hillsboro VA (Loudoun, County) harvested on October 3rd, 2023.  The other lot of Petit Verdot was grown by Matt Harsh at 78 Acres on a steep hillside in Smithsburg, MD on October 5th, 2023.  Each lot was fermented separately with native yeast fermentation on the skins for 15 days.  After, the wines were pressed to both 225L and 500L neutral French oak barrels to age for 10 months.   Three weeks before bottling, the barrels were joined together in steel tank with a 30 ppm sulfite addition added at this time.  The wine was bottled without fining or filtration on August 23rd, 2024.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Cast is a deep and dark purple rich in spice, savory, and fruit aromas. A fruit forward wine, dark plum and black cherry are present on the palette alongside dried Provencal herbs. The wine is well structured with a medium body and noticeable tannin.

The 2023 Cast can be drunk now and up to 7+ years. There is no reason that this wine cannot be aged in bottle for a considerable amount of years, as the primary fruit flavors revolve into tertiary flavors such as leather and tobacco.
